I found this to be an interesting video about the logistics and isolation of Antarctica. I was surprised to hear that even aircraft are unable to land there (except a few emergencies) 7 months out of the year. Another oddity is that there is VERY little precipitation: only 2-8 inches per year on average. It's only due to the extreme cold that there a buildup of snow and ice over long time periods.
