The Imperial Palace is actually located within the castle grounds and cannot be toured by the public. What you will see here are the external grounds of Edo Castle. This is the one of the highlights of most escorted tour groups to Tokyo. The groups usually have a photo stop with what is referred to as the Double Bridge in the background.
Having lived many years in Tokyo, I've visited this place many times when escorting visitors around and suggest you stop here for a memorial picture and combine this with a walk around the Ginza. Also, on the way to or from Ginza you can easily pass by the "Dai Ichi" Building which served as General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters during the occupation of Japan after World War II.
