If you don't have time to visit the Forbidden City, then a visit to Tiananmen Square at least allows you to see the main gate into the Forbidden City and lots of sightseers from China and around the world. It is one of the most photographed scenes in China. So if you are very limited in time, at least visit Tiananmen Square for a quick photo-op.
