Crystal Lake, the largest lake of this name in Michigan, is located near Lake Michigan in Benzie County about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Traverse City and about 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Frankfort at 44°39′N 86°09′W. It measures approximately 2.5 by 8 miles (4 by 13 km), and has a maximum depth of 165 feet (50 m).

At 9,854 acres (40 km2), it is Michigan's ninth largest inland lake. Up to and through the American Civil War years Crystal Lake was known as "Cap Lake" due to the frequent whitecaps visible on its surface. Crystal Lake is adjacent to the southern reaches of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The watershed that feeds Crystal Lake is very small, and fertilizer and sewage outflows are minimal, leading to the exceptionally clear and beautiful water that gives it its current name. The surface area of the lake is 35% of the total area of the drainage basin (land and water combined).

Beautiful crystal clear waters + a sand bottom

I really love Crystal Lake, Michigan. The name is apt. The waters of Crystal Lake are clear like a swimming pool. But when I tell people about Crystal Lake, I often describe it like swimming in the Caribbean without the salt water or the sharks. The waters are that clear, although rather cool. The lake boasts a sand bottom from thousands of years of the dune sand blowing over from nearby Lake Michigan.

Crystal Lake is a place you normally visit and rent a home for a week (or two) and relax. Nearby, there are other crystal clear lakes to explore plus Lake Michigan, itself. There are all kinds of outdoor activities including the expected water activities plus golf, horseback riding, camping, and so much more.

I've been fortunately to visit Crystal Lake several times and always want to go back. My visits have only been in the summer to get away from the midwestern heat. But the area also has a vibrant winter season for those into cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and other winter activities.

Traverse City isn't all that far away for a large selection in restaurants. But nearby Frankfort has some interesting places to try out as well.
