Tokyo's most popular attraction

Sensoji Temple in the Asakusa District of Tokyo is probably the most visited attraction in Tokyo by both Japanese and foreign visitors. A visit here was always the highlight of Tokyo sightseeing tours back in the days when I escorted American tour groups in Asia.

Most people enter the Sensoji Temple grounds through the Kaminari (Thunder) Gates and proceed down the Nakamise Arcade of souvenir shops. If you wish to buy Tokyo souvenirs, the arcade is a great place for that. Once you reach the temple structure and pagoda, there is a large incense burner around which many Japanese will gather to be immersed in the smoke of burning incense that has been blessed by the prayers of the temple's monks.

The whole area offers many of photo-ops and the surrounding streets have all kinds of small restaurants. I've been to Sensoji Temple dozens of times and have never tired of it. You can easily reach it by a short walk from Asakusa subway station. Be sure to include Sensoji Temple on your Tokyo sightseeing list!
