The Golden Pavilion - Kyoto's Most Famous Garden

To me, Kinkaku-ji, otherwise known as the Golden Pavilion due to the golden structure in it's garden, is the essence of Kyoto gardens. It is on virtually all tour itineraries of Kyoto. I've been here several times and it is my personal favorite of Japanese temple gardens. Too often, you are rushed to see it if you are visiting Kinkaku-ji on a tour. However, if you have the chance to visit Kinkaku-ji on your own, you can linger longer and enjoy it more from it's many perspectives (which is true of all of Kyoto's gardens). If I had to choose just one garden in Kyoto to see, it would be here at Kinkaku-ji.
