Imperial Palace Style Shrine + Garden

Although not very old, The Heian Jingu Shrine is designed in the ancient Chinese palace style used by emperors in the Heian Era of Japanese history when the Japanese were importing Chinese architectural styles. If you have been to the Forbidden City in Beijing, you will recognize this style - albeit on a much, much smaller scale. For that very reason, the shrine is easy to walk through. And, for me, I enjoy the shrine's garden and pond which takes up about 1/2 of the land area.

When I used to escort group tours in Japan, the Heian Shrine was on many of the 1/2 day sightseeing tours of Kyoto. It is probably in the top ten of the easily visited sites of Kyoto.
