My favorite place in Kamakura

The Great Buddha (Daibutsu) statue is my favorite place to visit in Kamakura. It is the 2nd largest Great Buddha statue in Japan (the other is in Nara). Pictures of the Great Buddha statue appear in most guide books of Japan. The statue is hollow and you can walk inside.
This bronze statue is thought to date back to the year 1252. It was originally housed within a temple structure that was washed away by a tsunami in 1498. Since then this Great Buddha has stood in the open air. It is interesting to ponder a tsunami that had the power destroy a substantial building this far inland and up a hill.
Kamakura is not far outside of Tokyo. You can easily visit to Kamakura using Japan's rail system and see many of it's sites on foot in a day outing. There are also escorted sightseeing packages available.
