I personally do not like to receive unwanted e-mail notifications from any source. Our system, like Facebook, does send out notifications from people that you have friended or are members in the same user group that you are a member of, etc.
The way that you can control such messages is by clicking on the My Privacy Settings menu choice at the left side of your desktop screen. Or, if you are using a cellphone, the same menu options are generally available to you on the "off-canvas" menu which you can access via the "hamburger" menu (3 horizonal lines) selector at the top of your screen.
There are lots of other privacy controls available under the My Privacy Settings as well. So it would be good to familiarize yourself with them to limit notices that are not important to you.
